As the saying goes, “seasons come and go”. Well, we have a few more days to end the year 2021. In hindsight, 2021 has in one word been; ‘dynamic’. Unlike 2020, when all we thought about was Covid 19 rampaging the world, 2021 came with a lot of uncertainties. Nonetheless, there were few hopes. We were unsure if we were going to continue living with the virus or finally going to say goodbye to it. Along the line, the hope of saying goodbye was clearly in sight but somehow things are reversing. Well, let’s leave Covid matters and focus on our person in the year 2021.

2020 and 2021 have been one of the economically challenging years worldwide. 2021 started as a post pandemic/lockdown economy with signs of recovery from the huge impact of the pandemic. However, it later became unpredictable due to the pandemic rearing its ugly head again. Living in a pandemic era has been difficult. Nevertheless, some people have really evolved and  become more matured. People are out there setting new records in their various fields. People could swear that 2020 and 2021 was their best year yet irrespective of the happenings around. The question then is how some people are making it irrespective of the economic hardship while others are not. After talking to some people about this year, it is obvious that the year was supposed to be a redefining moment.

Lessons learned during the lockdown process if any were supposed to be implemented during this period. The period also exposed those who shut down their life because of the lockdown and those who went back into their closets to restrategise waiting the reopening of normal routine. This then explains why some people came out of lockdown and irrespective of economic hardships, are still making something for themselves and others still trying to find the way. So this year was hard, and is that enough excuse for lack of growth this year? Imagine if you had taken up a hobby of reading a book every 3 months. You could at least boast of your intellectual growth (4 books) at the end of this year. Growth is not only restricted to finances, or spirituality hence bringing me to the main point of this write-up.

Have you grown this year and bear in mind that this is not about age? Consider your health, intellect, finance, relationship, spirituality or anything in between. What great networks or relationships have you built this year? How is your mental, emotional and physical health? Are they better now than when the year started? What skill set have you added to your life this year? How about your finances? Let me assume that because of economic hardships, your finances are not exactly what you expected it to be and probably that compromised your mental and emotional health. What about the other aspects? This is just to draw your attention to the fact that economic hardship is not justifiable for your lack of growth this year. Your physical health and intellect could have been worked on. Regardless, it’s never late to make an effort.

Far from being judgemental, this write-up is a wakeup call and a prompting to do better as the New Year approaches. Just because one aspect of your life is in shambles does not mean the other parts should also be stagnated. If your finances are not working in this period, as you are working to make it better, channel your energy and time also to something that is working. Before you know it, things might work out and turn your finances around. Do not shut down because an aspect of your life is not working. It is just a temporary situation and for you not to have any regrets about wasted time, do something else. When things pick up you will be glad you did.

As the New Year approaches, this is a period to take stock of your life. Irrespective of how 2021 has been, pick yourself up and look forward to the new year. Use this time to set strategic and realistic goals. Do not wait till the New Year before you rush into setting goals for the year. As the festivities are going on, spend a day or two in your closet and strategize. Remember to make room for serendipity as you strategize and know that hardships always come at a point in life but it’s up to you to put strategies in place so that you can rise above them and still live your life irrespective of the present condition.
